Overview
This week we will begin a study of work in Arlington Virginia. The goal will be to do a joint investigation into the place where we live, to learn more about the people who live here and how they make their livings.
We'll break into groups and investigate various aspects of living and working in our county.

Classwork
We agreed at the end of last class that we will choose our own groups for this next project. I'll list some topics (we can brainstorm more in class), and then you form groups of three people to investigate the topic and present your findings.
Here are some topics to get us started:
- Arlington Demographics 1 - Who lives in Arlington? Include population information and distribution on a map of the county. Also include population trends - is the population increasing or decreasing and by how much?
- Arlington Demographics 2 - What is the income distribution in Arlington? Include information on mean, median and mode of individual and family income and income distribution in different parts of the county.
-
Arlington Demographics 3 - What is low-income / poverty rate in
Arlington? How many people living here are near or below the poverty line?
How is the
poverty line
determined? What are the numbers if you include theworking poor
? - Working in Arlington 1 - What are the three top jobs among Arlington residents? Who are the employers that provide these jobs?
- Working in Arlington 2 - What are the jobs held by low-income members of our community? List as many as you can find.
We will have either one or two class periods to work on these investigations.
Please don't rush through them. Instead, really dig in
to them and try
to understand the data you find.
