Entrepreneurship Weekly Assignments: Week 21

Entrepreneurship

Thursday, February 12th

Classwork

We will begin class today by sharing the presentations on property and ownership that were assigned last time we met.

After that you will individually login to your MyAccess account (thanks for checking this process out, Aura!), then complete the Top skills assessment on SchoolLinks, and finally fill out the results on a worksheet I'll give you and turn it in.

You will earn a grade for today weighted evenly between your presentation and your completed Top Skills worksheet.

Classwork

We will begin class today with several quotes from Wealth Supremacy by Marjorie Kelly.

Water is a global commons, 'the common property of all'. Water belongs to the earth and all species. Access to clean, affordable water is a fundamental human right. (page 7).
Big capital doesn’t ask who should own water. Finance functions today as a colonizing force, and the colonizer seeks to own everything. (page 6).
The nation’s property owners represented the 'settled, permanent substance' of the nation, Burke asserted; hence, the wealthy were the rightful rulers. If the 'swinish multitude'—the hairdresser, the candlemaker—were permitted to rule, it would 'pervert the natural order of things.' The very idea of democracy, Burke feared, could have 'the pernicious consequence of destroying all docility' in those unsuited for citizenship. (page 51).

Using these quotes for inspiration, create a presentation titled Property and Ownership that addresses the following questions:

  1. What is property?
  2. What does it mean to own?
  3. What kinds of things can be owned? What kinds of things should be owned?
  4. Are there things that definitely should not be able to be owned? If so, provide examples.
  5. With the things we agree should be able to be owned, should there be limits on how much an individual can have?

This week we will have the following groups:

  • AV, JJ and Anthony (a.k.a. the couch crew)
  • Alejandra, Jhon and Noah
  • Yamilet, Darling and Aura
  • Peyton, Julian and Mostapha
  • Madie, Molly, Jeidy, Zander and Jeff (a.k.a. the bookkeepers)

The questions ask for your thoughts and opinions, which you should provide along with some sound arguments of support. The bookkeepers group has an alternative project, to try to use these instructions to setup GnuCash accounts for payroll, and to enter the 2025 SECOSOL transactions into GnuCash using the accounts.

Please have your work ready to present in class on Thursday.
